Подвыпивший. Если состояние трезвого сознания и беспамятства рассматривать как два участка суши, то пространство между ними можно считать морем. Чтобы попасть из состояния совершенной трезвости в состояние совершенного забытья или leglessness («безногости»), нужно, конечно, проплыть по этому морю. На полпути ты оказываешься ни трезвым, ни пьяным до потери сознания, т. е. подвыпившим. Отсюда родилось выражение half-way over the sea (на полпути в море), которое со временем сократилось до half-seas over.By midnight Boris was half-seas over and by one o'clock he was under the table. — К полуночи Борис хорошо выпил, а к часу ночи уже был под столом.
